Setting a budget

Modified on Fri, 2 Oct at 5:00 PM

A budget is what your committee agreed to raise or spend on each category this financial year. It does not change your accounts in any way; it is the figure we compare them against, so you can see at a glance whether you are on track.

How do I set one?

  1. Go to Finances > Budgets
  2. Choose the financial year at the top of the page
  3. Enter a figure against each category you want to budget for. Money in and money out are two separate tables, because a committee agrees them as two different conversations: what we expect to raise, then what we plan to spend.
  4. Choose Save

Afterwards you are told how many categories now have a figure against them and how many were left blank.

Do I have to budget for everything?

No. A blank box means nothing is budgeted for that category. Most committees set figures for the handful that matter and leave the rest, which is exactly how it is meant to be used. Clearing a box removes that category's budget.

What does "so far" mean?

Everything recorded against that category inside this financial year, including your card takings, which post themselves, and any expense claims you have paid.

Why do I need a financial year first?

Because a budget is for a year. If you have not set one up, the page sends you to Finances > Year End to add one.
