Why is Stripe asking me for more information?
Stripe is required by law to carry out due diligence on all accounts that use their payment services. This process is known as Know Your Customer (KYC).
Stripe applies this requirement to every account, not just those connected to PTA Events, Clubs Hub, or Charity Hub. You may already have received communications from Stripe requesting information, or you may receive them shortly.
What do I need to do to prepare?
Please ensure that your contact details are up to date in Stripe.
We also strongly recommend that your website clearly explains what you sell. Stripe uses this information as part of their verification checks.
You can update this on your PTA Events / Clubs Hub / Charity Hub website by going to:
Admin > Settings > Basic Details > What we do
Example wording you can use:
We are a committee of parents, carers, and teachers working together to organise events and raise funds to enrich the experience of the children at our school. We sell tickets to fundraising events such as discos, our annual fireworks display, and summer fayre, as well as raising money through the sale of second-hand uniform and other fundraising products.
What if Stripe says I’m registered as a business?
If you have registered with Stripe as a business, Stripe may request business documentation within 14 days.
⚠️ Important:
PTAs should not be registered as a business. Although Stripe advised this several years ago, this guidance was incorrect.
If your account is currently registered as a business, you should change it to Sole Trader (or Non-Profit / Charity, where appropriate).
How to update your business type in Stripe:
Log in to your Stripe Dashboard
Go to Settings > Business Settings > Tax Details
Change your business type to Sole Trader or Non-Profit / Charity
Ensure all required identity and verification documents are provided (this is a legal requirement)
What if I am a legitimate business?
If you are genuinely operating as a business, you must provide Stripe with all legal documentation they request in order to continue using their services.
What if I registered as a charity using a charity number?
If you registered with Stripe as a charity and entered your charity number in the business number field (as Stripe previously advised), we recommend contacting Stripe directly.
This will allow you to confirm that Stripe is not attempting to validate your account against Companies House, which may cause verification issues.
How do I know if Stripe needs documents from me?
To check whether Stripe requires documents from you:
Log in to your Stripe Dashboard
Go to Settings > Business Settings > Reporting & Documents > Documents
Upload any documents Stripe has requested
We will also be adding visibility of this information to your PTA Events dashboard shortly.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
We’re happy to help where we can, but for the fastest and most accurate support, we strongly recommend contacting Stripe Supportdirectly regarding verification or documentation requests.
What is the most important thing to remember?
✅ PTAs must ensure they are registered with Stripe as a Sole Trader.
This is the single most important step to avoid delays or account restrictions.
