Stripe - Know Your Customer

Modified on Tue, 19 Dec, 2023 at 12:25 PM

Stripe are required to undertake due diligence on all of their accounts. You may or may not have received information from Stripe regarding this. This process is called a "Know Your Customer" survey and Stripe are doing this for every single account that uses their payment services - not just those connected to PTA Events/Clubs Hub/Charity Hub.

You will need to ensure you have contact details up to date and we also recommend you have some content in the footer of your website which explains what you sell. You can edit this in "Admin" >"Settings" > "Basic Details" tab and then "What we do" on your PTA Events/Clubs Hub/Charity Hub website. We recommend something like the following:

We are a committee of parents, carers and teachers working together to organise events and raise funds to enrich the experience of the children at our school. We sell tickets to our fundraising events such as Discos, our annual Fireworks Display and Summer Fayre as well as raising money through the sale of second hand uniform and other fundraising products.

If you have registered with Stripe as a business then you will need to provide them with business documents within 2 weeks. No PTAs should be registered as a business despite Stripe informing us 4 years ago that that's what you should do. If you are registered as a business then please ensure you change to a Sole Trader. You can do this by accessing your Stripe dashboard and browsing to "Settings" > "Business Settings" > "Tax Details" and either change your business type to "Sole Trader" or "Non Profit / Charity". You must also ensure that you have provided Stripe with verification and ID as is required by law.

If you are a legitimate business then you must ensure you provide Stripe with all the legal documentation they require about your business.

If you have registered with Stripe as a charity and entered your charity number in the business number field (as we were told to do by Stripe some years ago) then we recommend you discuss your account with Stripe to verify that they aren't trying to validate your account against Companies House.

To see if Stripe require you to upload any legal documents then browse to your Stripe dashboard and go to "Settings" > "Business Settings" > "Reporting & Documents" > "Documents" and you will be able to upload any documents required. We will shortly add this information to your PTA Events dashboard.

If you have any questions about this process we can try our best to answer them but ideally you should contact Stripe support.

The critical thing is that you ensure as a PTA that you are registered as a sole trader.
