Every transaction has an optional Event field. Linking the costs of the summer fair to the summer fair means the money you spent sits against the money it took, so you can see what the event actually made rather than what it grossed.
How do I link a transaction to an event?
When you record or edit a transaction under Finances > Transactions, choose the event in the Event field. Expense claims can be linked to an event too, by the treasurer when the claim is approved.

How do I see what an event made?
Go to Finances > Transactions, type the event's name in the Search box and choose Filter. The list shows every receipt and payment linked to it with totals at the foot of the table, and you can export it with Copy, Excel or PDF.
Note: card takings posted from a payout are linked to the event the tickets or products were sold on, so an event's card income is already in its figures. You only need to link the costs.
