Can I run prize draws, raffles, lotteries or games of chance?

Modified on Mon, 22 Dec at 3:05 PM

You can use PTA Events to take payments for prize draws, raffles, 100/200 clubs, and competitions or games of chance (including bingo) through your PTA Events website.

Before you can do so, you must provide PTA Events with a valid Small Society Lottery Licence, or proof that one has been purchased within the last 12 months.

Even when payments are taken online, you must continue to run raffles and lotteries in the traditional offline manner, as there are legal obligations you must meet (such as ensuring specific information appears on tickets).

Why Is a Lottery Licence Required?

A Small Society Lottery Licence is required for both offline raffles and online prize draws.

This is because Stripe, our payment provider, requires visibility of a valid licence. Selling gambling-related products without one would breach Stripe’s Terms of Service. Stripe also requires confirmation that the organisations using the platform are legitimate charitable organisations operating within the law.

How to Upload Your Lottery Licence

To upload your Small Society Lottery Licence:

  1. Go to Admin

  2. Select Settings

  3. Click the Payment tab

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page

  5. Click Upload Lottery Licence

How to Apply for a Small Society Lottery Licence

If you do not already have a licence, you will need to apply through your local licensing authority (usually your local council).

  • Applications are made via your local council, which can be found on GOV.UK (opens in a new tab).

  • The registration fee is £40

  • The annual renewal fee is £20
